The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is a public research university located in El Paso, Texas, United States. Founded in 1913, it was originally known as the Texas State College of Mines and Metallurgy. UTEP is the largest and oldest R1 Hispanic-serving institution in the continental United States (excluding Puerto Rico) and is classified as an R1 doctoral university by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, with research activities ranking among the top in the nation.
