Founded in 1942, the United States Merchant Marine Academy, or USMMA, has an educational program accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and offers a four-year undergraduate education leading to a Bachelor of Science degree. Students receive not only a broad liberal arts education, but also specialized merchant marine officer training and military training. Graduates receive a Merchant Marine Officer's License from the U.S. Coast Guard and are commissioned as reserve officers in the U.S. Armed Forces.
